So I have decided it was time to make a new fight series in the place of PSD, one which had the winners decided by the fans. I haven't thought of a name for it yet, but that is not exactly what I want now, I can find a name later. This thread is just to announce the series and to explain how it will work.
First off - the series will be a league with 64 fighters. The series will have a thread, showing the Elo ratings and rankings for each fighter. Elo ratings are a rather precise way to determine the chances of one fighter to win. The system was designed by Arpad Elo, and was originally used for chess ratings; it's still used by FIDE. In 1997, it has been adapted to football (soccer) matches, in a way I find easier, more pratical and more adequate for this series. Ratings tend to converge on a team's true strength relative to its competitors after about 30 matches. Ratings for teams with fewer than 30 matches should be considered provisional.
The ratings are based on the following formulas:
Rn = Ro + K × (W - We)
Rn is the new rating, Ro is the old (pre-match) rating.
K is the weight constant for the tournament fought:
60 for the tournament (which will be explained later);
20 for friendly matches.
K is then adjusted for the vote difference (amount of votes the winner had minus the opponent's number of votes) in the fight. In order to adjust this, the following formula is applied:
K = V + 11 / 8
Where V is the vote difference.
W is the result of the fight (1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw, and 0 for a loss).
We is the expected win expectancy from the following formula:
We = 1 / (10(-dr/400) + 1)
I will be updating the Elo ratings and ranks instantly after every fight.
About the tournament;
Apart from friendly matches, which are random fights that can happen at anytime, there will be a tournament that will occur. This tournament should happen annually, but that can change. The tournament will have 32 fighters, 4 in each of the 8 groups given at its start. The two fighters of each group with the best performance will go to the round of 16 and will still fight in the tournament, while the other two are eliminated. Basically, it uses the same tournament format as the World Cup 2014.
The qualifiers will not be actual animated fights though, as that would take too long. There will be 128 fighters to vote for, in 4 polls. Each poll will last 4 days. The 64 winners of a poll get 3 points each, while the losers get none. Overall, after 4 polls, the 64 contenders with the most points qualify to the league and have a chance of qualifying for the tournament. The losers get no chance to return.
