So, for those of you familiar with the end-Cretaceous Maastrichtian fauna of North America, you will immediately notice that there is barely anything on maniraptors. Indeed we have barely anything of a small theropod fauna from the end of the Cretaceous, and other than teeth, no real species have been published yet. Occasionally a documentary may show images of a Dromaeosaurus or Troodon living alongside T.rex and Triceratops, but in truth we have no fossils from either in these areas, and they are put in to represent the owners of the unidentified maniraptor teeth we find in these places, even though that is highly unlikely. Luckily, no longer do we think that this will happen anymore. There are a lot of unnamed maniraptor fossils from this blank spot in their history, notably complete primitive birds, large troodonts, possible microraptorines, and the second-largest oviraptorid ever found are all soon-to-be published finds. The first of these new finds though was just published, meet Acheroraptor temertyorum, the youngest dromaeosaurid ever found. He's not a misplaced Troodon or Dromaeosaurus from an earlier time, he really did live with America's star dinosaurs. What's interesting about this guy is that he is closely related to Asian dromaeosaurid species like Velociraptor and Tsaagan, not earlier American species of dromaeosaurids. He's basically an all-American Velociraptor that lived alongside T.rex. Pretty cool right? The paper: A new dromaeosaurid (Dinosauria: Theropoda) with Asian affinities from the latest Cretaceous of North America

Do not even seems to be a Troodon because of small eyes (if this drawing is exactly how scientists think it was one of those dinos), but how can we be so sure that is not a Dromaeosaurus?

This sounds like more evidence to back up the Asian T. rex theory...

Do not even seems to be a Troodon because of small eyes (if this drawing is exactly how scientists think it was one of those dinos), but how can we be so sure that is not a Dromaeosaurus? Dromaeosaurus and Troodon didn't live at the same time at this taxon, as I made perfectly clear above. D. albertensis and T. inequalis are part of the earlier Dinosaur Park fauna and T. formosus is part of the Judith River fauna. Both genus have only been lumped together with the Hell Creek and Lancian Fauna in documentaries like WWD and DR because we didn't have a name for the teeth we were pulling out of those formations from both troodontids and dromaeosaurids. (The troodontid teeth got a proper name recently, however, and are now called Pectinodon bakkeri. Thus, it's now considered improper to call any Maastrichtian troodontids "Troodon". Everyone should instead be calling them Pectinodon.) Moreover, the specimen is a velociraptorine, not a dromaeosaurine or a troodontid, and thus extremely different to either of those two groups. I can't see how anyone could consider them synonymous. The Asian origin may not be as likely as I thought. The discovery of Lythronax actually suggests that maybe it did come from North America after all, as Lythronax is the closest relative of the ancestor of T.rex, Tarbosaurus, and Zhuchengtyrannus. In an ironic and opposite case, it might be that Tarbosaurus and Zhuchengtyrannus evolved from American ancestors like T.rex. I talk about this a little bit in this post if you want to read more.

Nice! When will a stk of this beautiful creature be released? We only have the two mandible by what I know, but since it's a maniraptor and closely related to Velociraptor mongoliensis, I bet it'd be very similar to it. I have measured its length based on the ~350mm skull. Since the largest Velociraptor known has a skull of ~230mm and a length of ~2.07 metres, I have calculated Acheroraptor temertyorum to be around ~3.1 metres. But that is still not sure, even though it's a possible range, it's not a very reliable estimate. I'm gonna try to make a stick of it soon.
