I’m agreed, prey is not the issue. Most large apex predators (e.g. orcas, great white sharks, crocodiles, pliosaurs) can actually rely mostly on prey smaller than themselves. Prey was certainly abundant where giant theropods existed, and certainly also large enough. Spinosaurus for example almost certainly fed organisms far smaller than itself in the vast majortiy of cases. Limits on theropod size are predominantly biomechanical, not ecological.

I dont think there will be a carnivore far heavier than spinosaurus and i definitely dont see anyone uncovering the remains of a 10 million foot godzilla eating therapod but i can see something larger than a spinosaurus. Will it be alot larger no but maybe if its slim enough i can see a 60 possibly 70 foot long carnivore though it will probably be very slow and really pushing boundaries in mobility but yeah i think the chances of something bigger than spino are pretty high.

Now I think there is a much larger possibility of a larger predatory dinosaur out there. Right now the largest confirmed theropod is T. rex going from 8.4 tonnes. Ever since Spinosaurus was brought down smaller than T. rex only Carcharodontosaurus, Gigantosaurus and Mapusaurus rival T. rex and none apart from maybe one Giganotosaurus has one confirmed size on a specimen.

This is the kind of thinking that made me create this thread! It's exciting to think about; especially with what you mentioned.

It's a very complicated topic though, as we can only express opinions. I, for one, don't think it's impossible to see something larger than Sue, even more considering Hartman's 8.4t could be an overestimate.

Sure, maybe a theropod being much bigger than that is pushing it. But we have completely dismissed the idea of a four legged carnivore! That would be a sweet find. You never know, it could happen. Don't crush my dreams.

We do have a very likely quadrupedal theropod. Still though, it seems to me that a theropod above 7-8 tons is far from impossible, Sue is our largest T. rex, yet it probabaly wasn't even 8.4 tons at all.

Imagine a carnivore built like a sauropod, or a hadrosaur. That would be fantastic.

That would be interesting, but sadly, I can't see it really happening with land-based theropods, at least not soon...
