It won't, but in truth, we will never stop killings so easily. So we just seek a way to reduce them. I am not saying I'm for the death penalty, though - Switzerland has a lower murder rate than in many countries with the death penalty, so it doesn't really work that well. Well that's just because it is Switzerland. Switzerland is like Canada Part 2... or vice versa. Swiss people are not a different species. They're people too, and Switzerland did what it takes for its people to not go full-on rebellious and start militias and whatnot.

Well I was alluding to the fact that Switzerland is typically the most peaceful and nice country, stereotypically at least... and then alluded to Canada because it also put in that category. But... whatever works.

To me the death penalty just seems like an excuse for barbarity. What does it really achieve apart from mindless quenching of blood thirst

It does solve a few issues here and there, it prevents certain people from commiting crimes again, but it does not do as much good as it causes harm.

The alternative for stopping people from committing crimes again is a life-time sentence in jail- far less barbaric and perhaps even useful in the long term.

Apart from the fact that prison is just as ineffective as the death penalty as it does nothing but alienate, mentally damage them, ruin any opportunity to move on in life and making them more likely to reoffend which will cause them to end up in prison again. All while wasting a gigantic amount of stolen taxpayer money.

The state could even get some of what it wants by doing it this way, they could be forced to work with things that would benefit society if they're in jail so they can get food. I'm not saying I support this, but it'd work better than the death penalty. Speaking of inprisonment and all, look at Norway.

It doesn't matter if the alternative to prison doesn't work, prison also hasn't helped a lot and could be worked on. Making prisons better places to be in seems to work, Norway did it that way.

There is no reason why prison has to be like this, there are ways of isolating someone so they are unable to commit crime but still allow them to live a full life under strict supervision.
