So, what do you guys think? Which music is better? Music from the 70's, 80's and early 90's? Or from the late 90's until now?
You guys seem to have strong opinions. This should be fun!

I'm kind of conflicted on this one. Although, obviously, music in general was a lot better back in the old times compared to now, most of my favourite bands have only appeared in the modern music era. Let's break it down.
Older Music: In general, music back then was much better (Keep in mind that this is just a generalization, and that these things still happen today) It was created with more talent, more care, and artists had to work harder to do well. Music also was so diverse, with many many different genres being popular, and every genre it seemed had at least 1 or 2 years in the spotlight. All music was bought, and because of this, artists created a lot more music. The live shows were exciting, and didn't need special effects to be that way; the musicians energy was enough. It was an awesome time, full of some of my favourite bands.
Modern Music: There is a lot more music today. Why? It takes nearly no effort to create. All music genres were wiped out with the birth of good computers. They could create music beats and synths much more easily than doing it by hand, and so the genres that featured computer technology completely took over. Now, all we have in mainstream music is pop and dance. It is always the same, as well, with the lyrical and musical content of a popular song being identical to nearly every other popular song. Love, drugs, or partying is all that is sung about, and its always the same build up and bass drop in every song. It's an easy way to make millions and millions, so everyone does it. Same thing over and over. It's disgusting, boring, and just awful. But, that is just mainsteam music. As I mentioned, a lot more music is being created. And there are a lot more hidden gems. Many of my favourite artists, although very unknown and not popular whatsoever, have been making music during this time. It just goes to show that good music is still out there if you look for it. It's just the mainstream radio that has gone to crap.
So, music was probably better earlier on. But that's not to say good music has been completely destroyed.

I find the generalization of "Older vs Modern" music fucking stupid because you are comparing music that has been in a span of 10-15 to several thousand years of music and tradition. Also I find the rise of cynical people to completely overshadow everything that is good and replace it with people bitching about how bad stuff is. Even though these self proclaimed "cynical critics" have no idea how to do it right and instead of intelligently hate something like yours truely they just complain about everything stupidly. Though I agree with sandman that mainstream music has gone to hell because of:
1. Companies have been able capitalise on the music industry by marketing heavily into the teenage demographic 2. The internet and viral sensations 3. Evolution of technology 4. the type of music which is popular now'a'days(not going to hate on rap, hip hop, pop or R'n'B just keep readin')
The evolution of technology has made music easier to make and more accessible to everyone. With this rap, hip hop and pop are some what easier to make than other genres as you don't really need to play certain instruments (though vocally it can be harder to sing than other genres). Companies can easily capitalise on such features because the music industry makes more money now than ever. World tours and more common than ever and make more money than ever before as global markets expand(There is a reason some of the largest concert of all time was in Moscow(Russia), Berlin(Previously East Germany) and Havana(Cuba) AFTER the sovet union collasped). Not only that viral sensations can easily make money by purposely being shitty and people will share it for being shitty which makes cynical people also responsible for such trendy garbage. Teenagers are also a lot more marketable as they are very impressionable and can look over artist's flaws infavour of their music. Also all the news about musicians can be accessed by everyone and the media will reach you quicker as the internet will media blast everyone with such news. Not only that cynical people on the internet will just talk about shitty products that will get instantly more fame and as I said it will overshadow the rest of actual good music.
Its people wanting live the American dream and the people who fail are instantly magnified.

I think this topic is really too general to be easily concluded. There are just so many songs from all of the mentioned decades that catch my interest, but in terms of personal liking, it seems to me the 80s had the most interesting music. However, in terms of creativity, for example, I really can't say modern songs seem to show me signs of originality as much as older ones.

As I said, thats a broad generalization as you are comparing 10-15 years with several thousand years of human history. Also mainstream viral sensation songs make up around 0.00001% of songs within the selected time zone in terms of creativity. Though most of the songs I listen to are from the 60s-90s. Overall it seems that music hasn't gotten any better but more accessible and we are still trying to adapt to the rapid changes. As you can see by these fucking shmucks in this picture:

People are probably less ignorant and stupid now today than ever before in human history. People just think that because the internet and globalisation has shown us how stupid a lot of people are. As I quote from George Carlin.

As I quote from George Carlin. You quote from Goerge Carlin, a question mark... Anyways I remember hearing about some quotes from Paul McCartney talking about how with the advancement of modern technology we are easily able to create convincing music (to mainstream audiences mainly) with hardly any real effort, as almost every sound can be processed and edited to perfection. Back in the time of the great bands like the Beatles, it was much more difficult to create music which is perfected enough to be able to be put on a professional album, as there was no advantage of modern technology. This means that many modern artists have a disadvantage when it comes to live performance, because their true musical standards are exposed

This means that many modern artists have a disadvantage when it comes to live performance, because their true musical standards are exposed YES. Most people think it's weird that the biggest artists are denounced for their crappy live shows, and their lip syncing, and that they all need all these fancy effects and dance routines to even make their concerts enjoyable. It's no wonder that bands like Muse, Rammstein and Foo Fighters are so well known for their fantastic talent and energy when performing live.
This goes to show, you don't have to be good at music to be popular in it.
