Walking & Running TutorialMany people often have trouble with animating a walking or running scene in their animations. Trust me, even the best animators do. It's part of being an animator, you will rarely master a movement at your first attempt. If you don't like to wait for the best results, then you're gonna have trouble with Pivot. As it has been suggested in the shoutbox, I'm gonna set a walking tutorial for all of you, since I actually haven't made many tutorials, and they're not very recent. Time to get started. First off, a walking cycle will depend entirely on what effect you want. Do you want the legs to feel heavy, and the dinosaur to look tired, lazy, or anything of that sort? Think about real life. How would an animal walk if it were pretty heavy? Of course, its legs would accelerate more slowly, and they wouldn't move that fast (otherwise, they could move quickly, but not for too long). In this case, the legs aren't going up too high either, and they slowly move forward. To do this effect, the legs will move somehow like this: As you can see, the arrows aren't facing upwards that much, unlike in a more explosive walk cycle: I like to refer those two as the opposite of eachother, because in a way, they actually are. That is because the first example looks better when accelerating slowly, while the other one looks better when in more explosive movements. However, in a walking animation, both of those styles will extend the legs in more or less the same way: I'm still working on this, leave any questions below.

I think you could go a bit more indepth, like give pivs for reference(piv file and .gif). A moving image is a lot more helpful than a still one. You could also do a frame by frame analysis of one of your examples to help even more.

I already avoided doing that because I thought it was really overdone, and people were still asking for these tutorials. Though since it's what you find helpful, I will do that. In the meantime, this old animation might give an idea of how to do that. Piv in the description:
Another good tip would be downloading a video with a walk-cycle (this can be a real video), and then check it on a video editor frame by frame, which can be done on most video editors.

Absolutely amazing tutorial. Very informative, interesting, and with pictures to go with it. This should be able to teach many new animators the basics in dinosaur movement expertly. Excellent job, Theropod. I look forward to many more epic tutorials!

Hey Could you put a piv download with a walk cycle so that i and fellow animators can see it frame-by-frame?

The video I posted has one, but since it is soon to be 3 years old I should make a new animation.

Also, just so you know. Theropods could only rotate their leg 90 degrees, hope this helps.

Already knew that, but since most people don't care about that for animation I guess.

Hainosaurus is now congeneric with Tylosaurus. I guess that means that it's Tylosaurus bernardi now.

I feel this is a more advanced tutorial, looks like it is for people who have already got the basics. It looks good though, I will try this after getting a grip of the basics (:
