Veterupristisaurus milneri
Name meaning: Milner's old shark tooth
Length: ~9-10 meters (30-33 feet)
Height: ~3.3 meters (11 feet)
Weight: ~4-4.5 tonnes (metric)
Location: Tendaguru Formation in Tanzania
Time: ~154-150 million years ago
Named from a single vertebra in 2011, V. milneri is supposedly the oldest known carcharodontosaur and was a basal member of this family. It is difficult to know much about it, since there is very little material that we have, but using references from close relatives such as Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, we can get a glimpse of what it might have looked like. This creature lived alongside Allosaurus, Giraffatitan (a brachiosaur), Ostafrikasaurus (supposed basal spinosaur), Kentrosaurus (stegosaur), the Archbishop Brachiosaur (it was deemed to be a separate genus from Giraffatitan and it will be described by the end of the year), and Ceratosaurus from the same time period. This monster would have been an apex predator that could have killed anything it so pleased, provided it not be reckless. It was also more a Late Jurassic brainiac, meaning he was a fair bit smarter than even Allosaurus, who was widely considered one of the smartest predators of the time. This would give it an edge against a lot of foes. Because of its size, he would not only hunt, but it would also intimidate smaller predators and steal kills from them. It and Ostafrikasaurus, if they prove to both be valid species (ostafrikasaurus was named from a tooth), they would be the first of many in a long lasting rivalry that lasted about 60 million years (154-94 mya).
