hello again. announcing that i have started on two sculptures that will hopefully give positive results. with the 1: 20 scale line of sculptures halted for a bit until i'm able to by more materials, i decided to work with a smaller scale just to pass the time. the 1:35 scale animals i plan to do are triceratops and tyrannosaurus. ( how original : ) but seriously, i do plan to do a few things differently that would set these sculptures apart from the usual mainstream once. for example, while many tyrannosaurus figures are created, they are often based on one of the largest and most well known specimens, which is in many cases is FMNH PR2081. i wanted to do a sculpture representing another tyrannosaurus individual. so i decided to create one on my favorite tyrannosaurus specimen. BHI 3033 stan has imo the most interesting and visually appealing body proportions out of the adults. its comparatively large head and semi slender build ( by tyrannosaurus standards) just makes it a very interesting looking tyrannosaur, and this i decided to represent him in this sculpture. heres the build so far. i sculpted the skull for the armature and to get a general idea on how tyrannosaurus skull was shaped. it was very good practice. and now for triceratops. the majority of triceratops sculptures made are often based off of triceratops horridus. its the most recognizable for its large bull shaped brow horns and small nasal horn. for a different take, i decided to depict triceratops porosus. the species with the larger nasal horn and downward curved row horns. i'm basing this sculpture on MWC 7584. the largest triceratops specimen. its was definitely an impressive animal. its hips were about twice as wide as stans it's at about the same stage as the tyrannosaurus. just like the theropod, i created its skull to use as a bases for it's facial details. this is the first time i attempted to sculpt a ceratopsian. it was anything but easy lol. but i think i got it to the point were i can manage with it as a base. they will be posed in a way that can make them look like their interacting with one another. the tyrannosaurus circling the ceratopsian as the triceratops pivots its body, keeping its business end facing the theropod at all costs.

Oh hell yes. BHI 3033 is pretty interesting, I seriously can't wait to see how you will sculpt Stan. Love the shape of its skull. Good work so far man.

started sculpting the teeth for the tyrannosaurus, which is honestly the hardest part of the entire head thus far sculpting small teeth is alot harder then it sounds. fortunately i think i got it into the preferable shape and positions i wanted. pics coming soon.

Is it me or did you sketch them first before sculpting them? That's an interesting technique, I tried sculpting before but never thought of that. How long did those "bases" take you? Your work is really fascinating.

thank you all for the comments and compliments i do use skeletal references drawn at a specific scale for creating the armatures of the sculpts. i then trace the skeletal and flesh it out for a concept drawing. the tyrannosaurus for example is largely influenced by saurians design, but with a few tweaks to make it my own. overall, i'm planning on giving my rex a more grizzly bear- hawk feel then what is seen in saurians. same goes with the triceratops, although it leaves a lot less wiggle room for interpretation. i actually have a spinosaurus and carcharodontosaurus planned after this duo is done. matter fact, their armatures are already done i have yet decided what to do for the carcharodontosaurus. the spinosaurus however is going to be based on an earless monitor. the head bases took a lot less time then i thought it would. not gonna lie, the triceratops skull was very complicated to figure out, but overall, only took a couple hours with a lot of breaks. making the tyrannosaurus teeth probably took twice an long! heres the pics of the sculpts so far. i'm not even done with all the teeth needed. the bottom jaw still needs many more teeth i'm also glad to say that the triceratops armature is completely finished. now the fun parts can begin

The kid isn't supposed to break it though. It's supposed to look good on the outside, not on the inside.
In other words, it's not a person.

heh, what if u made a bunch of models russian dollish style? Like build a skeleton and a hollow dinosaur and make it that you can attack the skeleton into the hollow model?

oh, its not the sculptures i would be selling. i would be molding and casting them. the ones i am going to be selling are going to be made of resin. latex is what is used to create the mold/ imprint and when i pour in the resin, it will harden into the exact form and proportions of the sculpture. heres a good video that shows the process
its way more practical then just making sculpture after sculpture.
